Schantz Family History

Location:

The last known location of the List/Schantz family prior to immigration was in Fischbach bei Dahn, Bavaria. This is where Adam and Apolumia were married and their oldest two daughters were born and died. Althought the Schantz family was from Fischbach bei Dahn, Adam and Apolumia moved to France, possibly to Reipertswiller where the List family was from.

While little else is known about the List family, the Schantz family has a rich history of ancestors in the area. In addition to Fischbach bei Dahn, others were from Dahn, Erfweiler, Hauenstein, Wilgartswiesen, Pirmasens and Nothweiler in Bavaria/Prussia/Germany. There were others to the south in France as well, including some from Obersteinbach and then Windstein. Research is still being done to determine if there is a legitimate link to the Ostertag von Windstein royality.

The map on the left below is the northeast section of the country of France. The map on the right is the zoomed-in area where the List and Schantz families originated in France. (Click on image for larger view.)

Johann George Schlick and Apollonia Hoffmann

Johann George Schlick was born in 1616 in Fischbach bei Dahn. He was the son of Peter Schlick or Jacob Schlick (b. 1588 in Bundenthal). He was a "Schultheiss" in Fischbach bei Dahn.

Apollonia Hoffmann was born in 2630 in Fischbach bei Dahn. She was the daughter of Laux Hoffmann and Barbara nn.

George first married nn. Schaff in 1645. Before she died in 1653, they had the following children:

  • Johann Adam, b. 1646, d. 22 Fab 1726
  • Christoph, b. 1650, d. 10 Jun 1715
  • Margaret, b. 1652, d. 10 Dec 1712

After George's first wife died, he married Apollonia in 1654. George and Appolonia had the following children:

  • Ludwig, b. 1656
  • Johann Lorenz, b. 19 Nov 1657, d. 19 Sep 1719
  • Johann Leonhard, b. 29 Apr 1659, d. Sep 1722
  • Johann Simon, b. 1661, d. 1743
  • Maria Eva, b. 21 Nov 1663, d. 1682
  • Maria Ottilia, b. 22 Nov 1666, d. aft 1682

Johann George Schlick died in 1670.

Appolonia Hoffmann died after 1673.

Appolonia's father, Laux Hoffmann, was born in 1592 and died after 1662. He was the son of Simon Hoffmann and Rachel nn.

Appolonia's grandfather, Simon Hoffmann, was born in 1565 and died before 1612 in Fischbach (Lembach). He was the son of Theobald Hoffmann.

Appolonia's great-grandfather, Theobald Hoffmann, was born in 1525 in Fischbach. He was the son of Laux Hoffmann, b. 1500.

If Johann George Schlick's father were Peter Schlick, there is a bit of a backstory to him. Albinus "Peter" Schlick was born in 1582 in Bohemia, arrived in Fischbach bei Dahn in 1620 as a Protestant, and died in Strassbourg, France.

Johann George Schlick was born in Bohemia in 1616, if Peter was his father. Oral tradition of the Schlick family, put into narrative by the Fischbach Priest, Johannes Kitz (1800-1847) for the "Geschichtlichen Verein des Bayerischen Rheinkreises" in December 1831 states:

"Bohemian Count Albinus Schlick (b. 1582, d. 1635) arrived incognito 1620 in Fischbach. He came with one son whom he led by the hand (Johann George) and another son (Simon) was born sometime after taking up residence in Fischbach. Albinus changed his name to Peter Schlick upon arrival. Albinus had participated in a rebellion against the Austrian Hapsburg House, which had failed, and so he was sentenced to the gallows. He took flight to the Palatinate region because Palatinate Electoral Prince Friedrich sided with the Bohemians in their rebellion against the Austrian House. Thus his life was spared.
"However, after residing incognito a number of years in Fischbach, his whereabouts was learned by the Austrian House. Hapsburg soldiers suddenly descended upon Peter (about 1632), took him to Strassbourg, France, and he was never again heard from. His wife and two sons remained, without reprisal, in Fischbach. Oral tradition implies that Peter was (by 1620) widowed, and that an area native (from Niedersteinbach) became his second wife and the mother of Simon after arrival in the hamlet."
